When it comes to the popularity of Balenciaga’s newly anointed creative director and all-round wunderkind Alexander Wang, there’s pretty much only one school of thought: universal adoration. Ask fellow designers, editors (he was championed by Anna Wintour), stylists (he keeps company with Carine Roitfeld) and the myriad of bloggers seen toting around his much coveted leathergoods, about their opinion of him and you’ll generally get the same answer: it’s love. With such good vibes heading his way, there’s room for Mr. Wang to get a bit subversive with his campaigns. After all, the ladies aren’t going to stop adhering to his once groundbreaking interpretation of Downtown cool just because his latest series of ads is a little bit yawn. Lucky, really, because aside from the ethereal beauty of Polish model Malgosia Bela, the Alexander Wang SS2013 campaign hasn’t really got much going for it. No, not even clothes, consisting of a slightly Warhol/90’s vibe.
Shot by Steven Klein and featuring nary a stitch from Wang’s line, the campaign takes an avant garde, painterly aesthetic. Could the designer’s new role at fashion house Balenciaga be encouraging him to adopt a more minimalist, subversive approach? We hope that, despite such grand new horizons, Wang’s eponymous label retains the mood that has made it unique and consistently remarkable.
